You are hiring! You found the perfect front office candidate! Next up – the working interview of course.
‘How do I have this person do a working interview’ you ask yourself.
You don’t. It is that simple. What are they going to show you? They will show you they do not know your protocols, they do not know how to interact with your patients and the worst part, they will show patients you have someone who knows nothing about how your office runs.
Let’s put the legal stuff aside – you know, the stuff that say if you have someone work one day they can get unemployment, or my personal favorite, paying them as a 1099 or worse yet, just giving them a gift card. (This is a whole other blog post!) Lets talk about what you would be better off doing.
Check References
Ask the person you speak with this: Would you rehire this person? On a scale of 1-10, how well did this person perform the job duties of this position? Remember, get permission to run a reference check.
Complete a Background Check
Run a background check on this person. This is part of you doing your due diligence. Do not skip this step.
Ask the Right Questions
I like to recommend you bring a candidate in and have them show you certain things in your software. Ask them to run an aging report. Put in treatment for yourself and ask them to order the treatment the way they think it should be done. Have them present the treatment plan to you. Ask them to show you the perio percentage in your practice. You get the idea! There are many things you can do without exposing them to your patient base. You never want to give the impression an employee does not know how to do their job.
Last but Not Least
Do Not let them answer the phones until they have been trained. Read that again!
If you do not have a protocol for taking NP calls, broken appts, and dealing with last minute cancellations, put one in place NOW. Making sure a new hire knows your way of doing things helps to set them up for success. Good Luck!
